Discussion:
[Darktable-users] Raw file size Canon 5D Mark III

Hello list,

I see different file sizes roughly from 22Mb to 31Mb for the RAW files of my Mark
III. The manual is explicit and states a file size of 27.1Mb. I would have
guessed that RAWs are always of the same size, since no compression is done.
Can someone who has access to a 5D Mark III please comment on this?

Thank you.
Best,
Wolfgang

File sizes vary, the reason being that raw files DO use compression, it's just
lossless. In the case of CR2 it's lossless JPEG IIRC.

File sizes vary, the reason being that raw files DO use compression, it's just

Raw images are basically the data as it comes directly from the CCD
detector in the camera.

However raw files can also contain text information about the picture
and conditions in the camera when the picture was taken. That might
vary, but it should only be a few bytes of difference.

Some might also contain a thumbnail of the image and that could vary in
size. One that causes variations of nearly 10Mb seems strange though.

Certainly the RAW files from my Fuji and GF-1 are, for each camera, the
same size.

Try running exif/exiftool or similar to find out what's "under the hood"
between the two extremes.

Canon does use (lossless) compression in their raw files and files can
vary widely depending on the subject matter. Shoot an image with lots of
blue sky and you will be amazed at just how small the raw data is.
Looking at random in my files I see a 25% variation even in quite normal
data sets.

Canon offers a 'safe average' value of file sizes to provide some sort
of rough yardstick for fitting images onto a disk. Not to worry!!

Hello,

Yes I do confirm that the size can be much different.

With my Nikon D300s the RAW (NEF) files can b... let me think, about
11 MB or 20 MB, approximately.

Don't worry about this, this is quite
normal.

Regards,

Bastien

The first one is a photo to white sheet with extreme out-of-focus (to check
sensor).

The theoretical size should be 22.1 MPixel * 14 / 8 = 38.7 MB (megapixel on
sensor * bits per pixel / bits per byte). Additionally jpg images and
additional information are saved on the raw file (but 4 MB of additional
information seems extreme. I'll check).

Cool,

your 5DMIII produces files with a Landau distributed size (with the
white sheet ones as outliers...)

:)
