Discussion:
[Darktable-users] zooming without a mouse?

Either I'm an idiot and can't navigate the GUI, or is there really no
way to interactively zoom in the image while editing without a mouse?
In other words, is it completely not designed for laptop use?

thanks,

JH

Darktable has 3 shortcuts for image zoom pre-sets (Alt+1,Alt+2 and Alt+3) -
see in settings.

But, AFAIK all relatively modern laptops have this area on the right of the
touchpad which acts similarly to a mouse wheel when you move your finger up
and down. Try it :)

Alt-1/2/3 only allow for closeup/fill/fit.

+ / - might be more intuitive and probably work better for zooming in
and out than the current keys. (Also adding the usual arrow keys for
panning might be helpful, btw.)

Personally, touchpads are the first thing I switch off. In BIOS. So
they're definitely dead and don't let my mouse jump to and fro all the
time. Maybe the original poster acts the same way. ;)

Anyway, it is generally helpful to have a good keyboard navigation. E.g.
one can easily add keyboard shortcuts on the (limited number) of keys on
a graphics tablet while this is not possible with mouse clicks.

DT doesn't have many default keyboard shortcuts, but we have a very
high number of keyboard shortcuts you can set through preferences...

since you seem to be using DT with keyboard only, you are probably
familiar with that, so I assume you can't set zoom+ and zoom- via the
shortcut system...

i'll have a loot at adding it to DR room, unless Robert beats me to it...

The more keyboard navigation options are available, the better, so I vote
for it :)
